“The missions of an Academy of Sciences: The example of France”

by Professor Étienne Ghys

October 17 2025, Professor Étienne Ghys, Permanent Secretary of the French Academy of Sciences, delivered a seminar on “The missions of an Academy of Sciences: The example of France” in the City University of Hong Kong. This would be one of the ''France Hong-Kong Distinguished Lectures Series” in 2025.

Numerous distinguished guests from universities and research institutions were welcome to this seminar. The session inspired thoughtful dialogue about the role of academies in advancing knowledge and international collaboration. And the guest of honour Mrs. Christile Drulhe, the Consul General of France in Hong Kong & Macau, had gave a speech during the seminar.

Supported by the French Academy of Sciences, the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, and The Légion d’Honneur Club Hong Kong Chapter, CityUHK has organized the France-Hong Kong Distinguished Lectures Series for 20 years. The first lecture was held in 2005, and at least one lecture is held each year. Each lecture focuses on a topic of contemporary interest that impacts society and is of interest to the general public.
