Event Recap: "Picasso for Asia - A Conversation" Exclusive Viewing & Dinner

On 14 April 2025, members of The Légion d'Honneur Club Hong Kong Chapter enjoyed an extraordinary evening at the exclusive private viewing of “Picasso for Asia – A Conversation.” This remarkable event not only showcased masterful art but also fostered cultural exchange among distinguished guests.

Exhibition Overview

The exhibition signifies a pivotal moment in Hong Kong’s cultural landscape, being the first major showcase of Picasso’s works in over a decade. Guests were treated to an impressive array of over sixty masterpieces on loan from the Musée national Picasso-Paris. These iconic pieces of art were thoughtfully arranged to engage in conversation with more than eighty works from the M+ Collections, featuring contributions from over twenty Asian and Asian-diasporic artists. This unique juxtaposition highlighted the shared narratives and distinctive perspectives of artists from different cultural backgrounds, emphasizing the rich tapestry of artistic expression.

The exhibition not only celebrated Picasso’s genius but also served as a platform for dialogue between Western and Asian art traditions. Attendees had the opportunity to explore how these diverse influences shape contemporary art, making the evening both enlightening and inspiring.

Guests and Dinner

In addition to our club members, the event welcomed esteemed guests from the Les Lumières de Paris Institut International Hong Kong Chapter and the Confrerie des Chevalier du Tastevin. The gathering was a perfect blend of camaraderie and cultural appreciation, as attendees shared their insights and experiences related to the artworks on display.

Following the exhibition, our esteemed President, Mr. Henry Tang, hosted a private dinner at Agate of M+ Museum. Relaxing atmosphere was  provided for further discussions and networking among the guests. The carefully curated menu featured a selection of gourmet dishes paired with fine wines, enhancing the overall experience of the evening.

During the dinner, Mr. Tang remarked on the significance of the exhibition, stating:

“The exhibition Picasso for Asia—A Conversation successfully demonstrates WestK’s commitment to upholding Hong Kong’s role as the East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange, a mandate clearly spelt out in the 14th Five-Year Plan. Indeed, WestK is actively deepening international exchange and cooperation, as highlighted in the recent Central People’s Government Work Report.”

His words resonated with the audience, emphasizing the importance of cultural initiatives in bridging gaps and fostering understanding among diverse communities.

Cultural Significance

The evening was not just about art; it underscored the vital role of cultural institutions in promoting dialogue and collaboration. In a world where cultural exchanges are increasingly important, events like this play a crucial role in establishing Hong Kong as a hub for international cultural dialogue.

By showcasing Picasso’s works alongside contemporary Asian art, the exhibition encouraged attendees to reflect on the evolving nature of artistic expression and the ongoing influence of cultural heritage. This conversation between East and West opens doors for future collaborations and a deeper appreciation of the arts.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of this memorable evening. Your presence made it truly special! The event exemplified the spirit of community and collaboration, reinforcing our commitment to cultural exchange and appreciation.
